Online Meteorology Degrees

If you are interested in the weather a career in meteorology may be a good option. I order to start a career as a meteorologist you are going to need to get a degree, ideally in meteorology or more likely atmospheric science. A lot of people would like to earn their degree online, this begs question of whether or not it is possible.

Unfortunately the options when it comes to online meteorology degrees are pretty limited and the few that do exist largely require that you already have a background in the field. A good example of this is the Bachelor of Applied Science in Weather Forecasting at the University of Arizona. It is intended for air force weather technicians and is therefore not available for most people.

Another option if you have military experience the degree in operational meteorology at Mississippi State University. If you don't have military experience they also offer a degree in broadcast meteorology that can be done partly online. There is also a masters degree in applied meteorology that is available for people who have a bachelors degree in a natural science. This may be your best option for an online meteorology degree.

With the very limited options for online meteorology degrees the best option may be to get a degree in another science like physics or chemistry and then enrol in a masters program. Admittedly online degrees in any of the hard sciences are hard to come by they are out there if you look. There are then a few online masters degrees in meteorology that you can choose from.

If you have an interest in meteorology but are not looking for a career as a meteorologist you do have a few options for courses that you can take. Penn State offers a certificate in weather forecasting for example. These courses are intended mainly for people who need to learn about the weather for related careers, like pilots or flight dispatchers or for those who simply have an interest in the weather.

Are Exams Required for Online Courses?

In almost all cases you will be required to write an exam as part of your online course, in many cases more than one will be required. In fact I would say be very wary of any online university that does not require exams. Exams are how students are evaluated at regular schools and so you should not expect it to be any different with online schools.

Since exams are generally required as part of an online course the obvious question would be how do you write them. This is where things can get a bit tricky. If you live near the university you are usually expected to write it there. Most will set up testing dates, usually on the weekend and you just show up and write the exam.

A lot of online schools, particularly those that have a lot of students from outside the local area have set up testing centers in major cities. These work basically the same as the ones at the school itself.

If you don't live near the school or a testing center you are going to have to make your own arrangements to write your exams. This is where things can get a bit complicated. You will need to find both a place to write the exam and somebody to proctor it. In most cases you will be expected to this at a local school with a local teacher as the proctor. In some cases it may be possible to do it at the library.

If you do have to get your own proctor it will add significantly to the cost of your degree. You will have to pay both the school and the proctor for administering your exam. In general you should expect it to cost somewhere between $50 and $100. This really adds up if you figure that there are about forty classes as part of a degree program and each likely has one or two exams.

Because of the difficulty in writing exams it is a good idea to make sure that know where you are going to write them before you register with an online university. The last thing that you are going to want is to find that you get near the end of a course and that there is nowhere to write the final exam.

Which Online University Should you Choose?

Obviously you are going to want to find an online university that will provide you with the education that you need. The question is, just how to do you go about doing this? There are lots of online schools out there, some are good and some are really bad, how do you tell them apart.

The first thing that you are going to want to do when you are looking for an online university is to determine what it is that you want to study. This may or may not narrow down your options for you. If your goal is to get a business degree you are still going to have thousands of schools to sort through as almost all online universities offer these courses. If on the other hand your goal is to get a degree in physics you will find that there are far fewer options.

Once you know what you want to study the next step for most people is to start comparing the schools that offer the appropriate degree. The big thing here is to make sure that you choose a school that is regionally accredited. There are more than enough schools that have regional accreditation that there is no reason to consider one that is not.

The next step is to look at how the courses are offered. Some require you to stick to a rigid schedule while others will allow you to work at your own pace. Some courses require a great deal of interaction while others will leave you alone to do your work. You can find all of this information in the schools calendar. Take some time to think about how you like to learn so that you can choose the course that is right for you.

While it is not a requirement I would strongly recommend that you limit your choices to schools that offer both online and regular on campus degrees. The main reason for this is that these schools are generally more respected than online only universities. In addition if you got a degree from a school that offers both types of degrees there is no need to put on your resume that the degree was earned online.

The last major consideration when you are choosing an online university is the cost. This can vary by a surprisingly large amount. The best value when it comes to online degrees is almost always state universities, interestingly it doesn't have to be a school from your own state. Most state universities will offer in state tuition rates to all online students regardless of where they live. Private for profit universities are almost always the most expensive option and rarely worth the cost, they are best avoided.

How to Succeed with Online University Courses

The increased acceptance of online university degrees has seen a large number of people enrol in online degree programs. The problem is that the completion rate for online degrees is very low. There are a few reasons for this but the main one is that most people are simply not prepared to succeed.

Have Realistic Expectations

The main reason that people fail with online university courses is that they have completely unrealistic expectations as to how fast they can complete a degree. This is perfectly natural as most people who enrol in online courses are doing so for career advancement and want to get it done as soon as possible.

The problem however is that it is completely unrealistic to think that you can carry a full course load while also holding down a full time job. Even worse are the people who enrol in self paced courses with the idea of finishing a four year degree in two years. While it is possible and people have done it, you will need a lot of discipline if you are going to achieve this.

Set a Schedule

One of the biggest challenges that people have when taking online courses is finding the time to do them. One of the advantages of online courses is that they have no fixed schedule. The downside to this is that without a fixed schedule a lot of people find it difficult to get their courses done. Most people need to be told when to get work on their courses. Obviously this is not going to happen with most online courses. That being the case you are going to need to set your own schedule and stick to it.

Choose Courses that are Appropriate

When you are choosing the courses that you are going to take as part of your online degree you need to make sure that you choose ones that are at the right level for you. Most people choose their courses based on what is required for the degree and not what they are actually ready to take. If you haven't taken a math class in twenty years it might not be a great idea to jump right into that course on partial differential equations right away. It may be necessary to take some courses that you have already taken in the past just to make sure that you are prepared for the more advanced work.

Are Online University Programs the Same as Regular University Programs?

This does the raise the question of whether or not these degrees are the same as the ones that are offered on campus and more importantly if they are as well respected.

In general if you attend a school that offers both online and and on campus degrees they will be largely the same. There may be some small differences for practical reasons, for example it is difficult to do laboratory work with online courses so some universities don't require them for online students. Other than that however the degree that you get taking online courses will be the same as the one regular students get. In fact it is becoming increasingly common to combine the two and do some courses online and some on campus.

Where things start to get a bit complicated is when it comes to online universities that only offer online courses. Obviously the degree is not going to the be the same as it is for regular on campus students since there are no on campus students. The question then becomes are these degrees at least as good as the ones earned at regular universities?

Unfortunately, the answer in most cases is no. To be sure there are some very good online only universities but you really have to pick through a lot of garbage to find the good ones. Most online universities are for profit businesses and are therefore more interested in making money than they are in providing a good education. It obviously costs them money if students flunk out so the result is that the courses tend to be too easy to ensure that they keep their paying customers enrolled.

If you are considering an online university our advice is to stick to the ones that offer both online and on campus courses. It is also generally a good idea to stick with public institutions rather than private for profit ones. This will help to ensure that your degree is taken seriously when you start looking for a job.

How are Distance Learning and Online Learning Different?

Over the last few years online learning has become very popular. Of course distance learning has been around for a long time. This does raise the question of just how are distance learning and online different and why has online learning become so much more popular?

Online learning is of course a type of distance learning, when we refer to distance learning therefore we can also be talking about online courses. There is however a pretty big difference in the way that online courses are presented as compared to traditional distance learning and this largely has to do with interaction.

Traditional distance learning usually required you to learn pretty much on your own. You were sent the course material and largely left to your own devices to work through it. In some cases there might have been a phone number that you could call to contact a tutor but many schools didn't even offer this.

Online learning allows for much more communication between you and your teacher and in some cases even your classmates than was ever possible with traditional distance learning. In addition to watching lectures on video you will likely be expected to take part in chats or video conferences as part of your course work. The result is that online courses are much more like regular college classes than traditional distance learning.

Most people would assume that online learning is a better option because it allows you to take classes that are similar to the ones that regular college students take and for many students this is in fact the case. There are however some students who do better learning on their own and prefer the traditional paper based courses. You should therefore not jump to the conclusion that you would be better with online courses.

Before you make a decision on which type of course you should enrol in you are going to want to think about what kind of learner you are. If you are the type of student who likes to take part in class discussions online classes are ideal. However for students who would rather just be left alone and allowed to do their work you will probably find that traditional distance learning classes are the best option.

Is it Worth Pursuing a Distance Learning PhD?

On the face of it a PhD would seem to be a natural fit with distance learning. After all most of the work done on a PhD is original research and writing your thesis, you can usually do this from almost anywhere. Things are not that simple however and in most cases a distance learning PhD offers fairly limited value.

The main problem with a distance learning PhD is that the main reason that people pursue a doctoral degree is so that they can get an academic position. The reality is that your chances of getting an academic position with a distance learning degree are very low. In large part this is because distance learning is something of a threat to academics who obviously make their living from teaching students.

The other issue with a distance learning PhD is that if you are doing your research on your own you will not have regular contact with your thesis advisor. While this may not be a huge problem in terms of actually completing your thesis it does have an impact on your career prospects. One of the first things that will be looked at if you apply for an academic position is who you took your PhD under; there are very few top academics who will act as advisors for a distance learning degree. This will be another huge issue that you will have to overcome if you want to get an academic position.

So does this mean that distance learning PhD’s are a complete waste of time? The answer actually is no it doesn’t. Over the last few years credential inflation has been somewhat out of control. In large part online learning has been responsible for that. The result is that a PhD is not simply an academic degree anymore; it can now be a huge benefit out in the private sector as well.

Since a PhD is no longer just for academics it would be fair to say that a distance learning doctorate is worth the time and effort. Just keep in mind that it is not going to get you an academic position. If your goal is to be a college professor you are going to have to get a traditional on campus degree.

How to Find Affordable Distance Learning Programs

The first thing that you have to do if you want to find affordable distance learning programs is to determine what it is that you want to study. Depending on your desired subject you may have a lot of choices when it comes to online colleges or you may find that your choices are quite limited. Obviously the more limited your choices the less likely that it is that you are going to find an affordable program. That being said popular programs like business tend to have high price tags.

Once you know what you want to study you will want to make a list of all the schools that offer that subject so that you can choose the one that offers the best deal. In almost all cases you will find that your local state university has the lowest tuition, this should come as no surprise as state schools are heavily subsidized. If your local state university does not offer the program that you want it is a good idea to look into state universities in other states. Often they will allow out of state students to take online courses with the same tuition as in state students.

When you are comparing the cost of distance learning programs it is important to make sure that you factor in all of the courses. Obviously the big one is tuition but it is not the only expense that you have to account for. Some schools, particularly those that are set up for distance learning will include the necessary text books as part of the course fee. If you have to buy your own books this will significantly increase the cost of your degree so this is something to look into.

The other big potential expense that you have to look at is exams. Almost all distance learning programs require exams for each course, often more than one. Where you write those exams can have a huge impact on the cost of your degree. If you live near the school you can usually write the exam there for no cost. Can you Complete an Online Degree Program at a Regular College?

A lot of people are working towards online degrees these days. Unfortunately a lot of people are finding that online degree programs may not be the best option for them. This does raise the question of whether or not it is possible to transfer the credits you have earned towards an online degree to a regular college to earn your degree.

There are a few reasons that an online degree program may not work out for many people, the main one is that the lack the discipline to finish it. Being able to work on your degree at your own pace and in your own time sounds appealing, the problem is that you have to actually find the time to do it. Most people do better with the rigid schedule that a regular college offers.

The other problem that online degree programs have is that they simply don't have the credibility that a regular college degree has. As much progress as online degrees have made over the last few years in terms of acceptance the reality is that a lot of people still look down on them, online learners really haven't helped themselves in this respect. In a lot of cases this is not that big of a deal, for a lot of jobs just having the degree is all that matters, potential employers likely won't care where it came from. For some jobs however where you got your degree will matter and in these cases an online degree may not be a good option.

Just because an online degree may not be your goal does not mean that you cannot take advantage of online learning however. Most schools will allow you to transfer the credits that you earned in an online degree program as long as the school you took them at was regionally accredited. It is important however to check on this before you enrol as some schools are far less willing to accept transfer credit in general. It is much easier to transfer credit to your local state university than it is to Harvard for example.

It is also important to make sure that you look at the residency requirement before you start taking an online degree if your goal is to transfer down the road. Most schools limit the amount of transfer credit that they will accept. Usually they require that you complete at least half of the degree with their courses. Some schools will accept even less transfer credit and a small number even more. You can get around this problem and take the bulk of your courses online and still earn a regular college degree however if you take the courses at a school that offers both online and regular courses.

How Does Home Learning Work?

Home learning is really just another name for distance education which encompasses a whole variety of different ways that you can learn. Regardless of the option that you choose the idea is that you can take classes from wherever you happen to be, for most people obviously this is as at home.

Far and away the most common method of home learning these days is online. The internet has opened up all kinds of opportunity for learning in places other than school. This is mainly because unlike traditional distance learning courses the internet allows for interaction with your instructor and other students. Normally when you take online courses you will be required to watch taped lectures and in most case to take part in video chats. There are however a huge number of different ways in which these courses can be structured so it is best to look into exactly how the course that you are planning to take works.

If you are not interested in online learning, and there are a lot of people who aren't, you do still have the option of taking traditional distance learning courses if you prefer. These are usually paper based, you will be given a study guide and a list of textbooks and expected to work through the material on your own. Most schools will provide a tutor that you can call if you get stuck however. This is a good option for independent learners who are not interested in a lot of interaction.

When you are choosing a school for your home learning courses it is important to make sure that you look at how the courses are scheduled. Some schools stick to the traditional school calender which means that you will have to stick to their schedule. Other schools offer self paced courses that you can start whenever you want and work through at your own pace. Obviously the self paced courses give you more flexibility but they also require a lot more discipline to make sure that you keep up with your studies.

If you live near the school you can usually write it there so there will be no problem. What are Massively Open Online Courses?

One of the hottest trends in distance learning over the last few years have been massively open online courses (MOOC). Many people believe they are going to revolutionize not just online learning but the entire education system. There is a long way to go before that happens but it is still a good idea to know just what these courses are.

Massively open online courses are intended to have the broadest level of participation possible, this usually means that they are taught over the internet and in most cases are free. As the name implies they also have open enrolment, meaning that anybody who wants to enrol can.

The part that attracts the attention of most people is the free part, yes it is possible to take online university courses for free. There is however a major catch, you don't earn university credit for them. You will however get a certificate of completion that you can use to prove that you have taken and passed the course.

Who Offers Massively Open Online Courses?

There are a number of places that you can take MOOC's, the big ones are Udacity and Coursera. Both are are private companies that offer courses that are taught by some of the top universities in the world. One of fastest growing MOOC provider is edX which was started by MIT but now includes participation from several top universities like Harvard and Stanford. There are lots of other providers that offer courses, a quick online search will bring up dozens of them.

Who Takes Massively Open Online Courses?

There are all kinds of people who take courses through MOOC providers, the most common are people who simply have an interest in the subject and want to learn more. Many people also use them for career development. While you will not get university credit for the courses that you take you do get a certificate of completion. This certificate can be helpful career wise for many people. These courses tend to be best suited for people who already have a degree and want to increase the knowledge or learn new skills.

It is also pretty clear that a lot of the people who take massively open online courses are just dabblers and not all that serious about them. Statistics show that the courses have a very low completion rate with less than ten percent of people who sign up completing the course.

Getting Credit for Massively Open Online Courses

As mentioned earlier it is not normally possible to get college credit for MOOCs however this is starting to change. The downside however is that it will not be free. Udacity have partnered with San Jose State University to grant credit for at least some of their courses. In order to get the credit however you will need to take a proctored exam which costs about a hundred dollars. Still this is quite a bit cheaper than taking a regular college course.

Some of the other MOOC providers are also starting to find ways to grant credit on a limited basis. Some have had their courses recommended for college transfer credit by outside agencies for example although again this requires a proctored exam. It is also possible in many cases to use what you have learned to challenge for credit at a university, most will allow you to do this. Still if your goal is college credit massively open online courses may not be the best option.

Is it Worth Taking Free Online College Classes?

Over the last few years a lot of online colleges have started to offer free courses and many people have started taking them. Before you get too excited it is important to keep in mind that these courses do not carry any credit. This means that you can't use them towards a degree and they are not likely going to be much use for getting a new job or a promotion. The main reason for this is that there is no evaluation on the courses, they teach the subject but they don't have any exams so there is no way of establishing whether you actually learned the material.

If you can't get credit for the free online college classes that you take why would anybody take them? The answer in most cases is that there are a lot of people who just like learning new things and this is a great way to do it. If you are one of these people than the courses are clearly worth taking.

Another reason that they may well be worth taking is that if you are enrolled at a college, whether a regular one or an online one they may be a way to help you with a course you are struggling with. If you just aren't understanding what you are being taught by your professor it is very possible that having it taught by a different professor might be useful, in these cases the free classes may be very useful.

In some cases it may also be able to use the free online classes to obtain actually college credit although you will have to do it in a round about way. The most common way to do it is to take a free online course and then go write the CLEP that covers that subject. Most colleges will accept CLEP's for credit. If there is no CLEP for course you want credit for you can also look into DANTES, ECE or Ohio University exam programs.

It may also be possible to use a challenge for credit option to get credit. Many schools will allow this and normally it involves writing an exam to be granted credit, although in some cases you may also be required to submit some assignments, how you will be assessed will depend on the professor of the class.

Can you Take Online College Classes While Still in High School?

As a general rule no you cannot take online college classes while you are still a high school student. There are however some exceptions to this. The main one is that some community colleges will allow high school students to take one or two classes online with the permission of their high school. Usually this is limited to very good students who find the high school classes too easy.

While you are not technically allowed to take online college classes while in high school in most cases the reality is that there are ways around this. The main one is to simply start taking classes at a college that offers open enrolment. There are a number of online colleges that do not have any admission requirements, anybody who wants to can enrol, although normally you are required to be at least 18 years of age. Since you don't have to have a high school diploma for admission they will really have no way of knowing that you are still in high school. As for the age requirement, few schools ever ask you to prove your age so this should not be an issue.

Although there are ways that you can enrol in online college classes while you are still in high school you do have to think about whether or not it is a good idea. The first issue is simply whether you are academically ready for college classes, there is a reason after all that you normally have to finish high school first.

The other issue if you choose to lie about still being in high school is that it may affect your ability to transfer your college credits down the road. A sharp admissions officer is likely to notice that you earned the college credits before your high school diploma and may have some awkward questions. That being said in a lot of cases nobody pays that close attention and if you earn enough college credits you may even be able to transfer without even having to send in your high school diploma.

So, we have established that you can take online college classes while in high school if you really want to. We have also established that it is not a good idea for most people. We also have no doubt that there will be plenty of people who will do it in an attempt to get a leg up on college and get it done as quickly as possible.

Do you Qualify for a Tax Credit if you Take Online College Courses?

Unfortunately this is one of those questions that is hard to answer, the best that can be said is maybe. It is going to depend on both the school that you attended and the number of courses that you took during the year. You will have to do some research in order to determine whether or not you qualify.

The first thing that you have to make sure of in order to qualify for a tax credit on your tuition is whether or not you are attending an eligible institution. The IRS keeps a list of which schools qualify so you will want to contact them to get a copy of the list. What you are looking for is what is called publication 970, this should tell you everything you need to know about whether or not you qualify.

The other big thing to make sure of is that you are taking enough courses to qualify for a tax credit. In general as long as you take a course in each semester of the school year you should be fine. This does however get a bit tricky if you are taking self paced courses. There is a formula for working this out, you can find that in publication 970 as well.

It is a good idea to make sure that you check into all of this stuff before you start taking classes. The tax credit can be a great way to reduce the cost of your degree, particularly if you are a working adult with a large enough income for the tax credits to be important. The last thing that you are going to want is to find out after that fact that you can't get a tax credit because you enrolled at the wrong school.

Can you get an Online Degree that Does not Require Math?

This is one of the most common questions that is asked in the distance learning forums, it seems there are a lot of people out there looking for degrees that do not require them to take math. Unfortunately the answer to that question is yes you can.

It makes sense that a lot of people ask about getting an online degree without taking any math classes, most people struggle with math and if you have been out of school for a long period of time it can be intimidating to have to start taking it again. The good news for these people is that there are plenty of online degree programs that do not require you to take any math classes.

I actually think that it is a bad thing that you can get an online degree without a math requirement. One of the keys to online learning being taken seriously is that standards have to be the same as they are for students at a regular college and there are few if any regular colleges that will grant a degree with no math credits. Since a large number of online schools are for profit businesses however and their customers clearly want a degree that does not require math they have made this possible.

If you are looking for a degree program without a math requirement your best bet is the private, for profit schools. In general state universities have the same standards for online students as they do for off line students and this almost always requires at least one math class.

While you can certainly get an online degree without taking math I would strongly recommend that you not follow this approach. Taking a degree that has the same standards as a regular college degree will give you a lot more credibility and it will help to improve the image of online learning in general. Besides in most cases the math requirement is only one course and as math courses go it is not usually a particularly difficult one. Equally important there is a reason that most regular colleges require you to take math, it is something that you really do need to know.

Is Online College Cheaper than Regular College?

It would seem like online college should be less expensive than a regular college, after all they don't have the overhead that a regular college does, unfortunately this is rarely the case. In most cases you will find that online college is more expensive than a regular college, there are a few reasons for this.

The main reason that online colleges are more expensive than regular college is that most of the purely online colleges are run as for profit businesses. They charge the amount that people are willing to pay in order to maximize their profits. Since online colleges generally target working adults who have more money than the average college student they can get away with charging higher tuition.

Oddly even the cost of taking online college courses at a state university is often higher than it is for regular students. In most cases the tuition is the same for both online and offline classes however there is usually an extra fee, most likely called a technology fee that you have to pay in order to take online classes. The amount is not all that great on a per class basis but it does add up.

While online classes are generally more expensive the news is not all bad. For example while most state universities charge an extra fee for online classes most don't charge out of state rates. Therefore you can usually, although not always, take online classes through a state university in another state and pay the same rates as in state students pay which is often much lower than out of state rates.

The other big savings when you take online college courses is that you don't have to actually attend the college. This means that you don't have to worry about things like commuting or moving to be closer to the school. You can continue to live wherever you are and take classes.

Online college also makes it possible for you to work full time while taking classes if you want. While this does not reduce the cost of the classes it does make it much easier to pay for them. That being said working full time will slow down how fast you can actually complete your degree.

In terms of the total cost for a degree online colleges are about the same as regular colleges. It therefore does not make a ton of sense to get one just as a way to save money. We would also recommend that you stick to the low cost state schools rather than the private online colleges, they are simply not worth the amount that they charge.

Can you Get Financial Aid for Online College?

As a general rule online colleges are treated just like any other school when it comes to qualifying for financial aid. This means that all of the grants and student loans that are available for students at regular colleges are also available for online students. There are however a few things that you will want to keep in mind before you run out and apply for a student loan.

The first thing to think about is whether or not it actually makes sense to take out as student loan. We have all heard the stories of graduates with huge amounts of debt, more than they are likely to ever be able to pay off in most cases, this is something that you want to avoid. Fortunately one of the advantages of online college programs is that they offer a way to do this.

One of the main reasons that people choose online college is that it allows them to work full time while they are in school. This should make it possible to cover the cost of your tuition without requiring that you take out a student loan. Of course this assumes that you don't choose a very expensive online college.

A lot of people pay far more than they have to in order to get an online degree and this is one of the reasons that they often have to take student loans, or worse remortgage their house in order to pay for school. The reality is that there is simply no good reason to pay tens of thousands dollars a year for an online degree. It might well be worth it to pay that much for a degree from Harvard but not from the University of Phoenix. Online degrees just don't have a good enough reputation to justify that kind of price.

There are lots of reasonably priced online degrees available, the best values are from the state universities. These should allow you to get the degree that you need without running up huge amounts of debt.

One other thing to consider if you are planning to work full time while you take classes at an online college is that this may reduce the amount you qualify for when it comes to student loans. Most student loan programs are based on the idea that you will be a full time student and not working full time. Even if you carry a full time course load if you also have a full time job there will be loan programs that you ineligible for. This is another good reason to not rely on student loans to get an online degree.

In all honesty if you are going to rely on student loans and are not planning to work full time you would be better off attending a traditional college. Most students find it easier to learn this way and the degree will carry more respect.

Can Online College Credits be Transferred to a Regular College?

Do Employers Care if you got an Online Degree?

The question is should you be concerned about what employers think of online degrees.

American Military University

Despite the name the American Military University is not affiliated with the military. Nevertheless they are set up to help military personnel to get a degree. One other benefit is that they offer some of the least expensive courses that you will find anywhere.

The Big 3

The Big 3 are group of schools that are known as assessment colleges. This means that they don’t actually offer courses, what they do is allow you to earn a degree by taking courses at other schools. This means that as you move around during your career you can take courses locally and transfer them into your degree program. They will also allow you to earn credit with exams like the CLEP or Dantes. They also tend to be pretty good about granting credit for military training. The Big 3 Colleges are Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College and Thomas Edison State College.

Schools that have a Partnership with the Military

One last place that  you will want to look if you are doing a degree while in the military is with the schools that partner with the military to allow personnel to earn a degree through a combination of their military training and online classes. A good example of this is the partnership the University of Arizona has with the Air Force to allow weather technicians to complete a Bachelor’s degree in weatherforecasting. There are lots of similar opportunities depending on your MOS, you will need to take a look at what is available. 

Is it Really Possible to Take College Courses Online for Free?

Whether or not you can take college courses online for free is going to depend on your definition of taking a college course. Many schools have started to make their course materials available for free online. The best known of these is MIT who have made the materials for all of their courses available online. What they do not do however is offer credit for the courses, for that you will have to sign up and pay the tuition. Basically the free courses are the online version of being able to audit a course, you can take them for your own interest but you won’t be able to get a free degree.

Just because you can’ t get credit for the free college courses however does not mean that they have no value. Obviously there is the benefit of personal enrichment that you can get from taking them, but you may also be able to turn them into college credit for a fraction of the cost of actually taking the courses.

There are a number of programs that will allow you to earn credit by taking tests to demonstrate what you know. The most widely known of these are the CLEP exams but there are quite a few others as well. The  open courseware that is available from many online colleges can be a great way to prepare for these exams.  Most colleges put a limit on how much credit you can earn through testing but a few like Thomas Edison State College and Excelsior College will allow you to complete a full degree in this way.

Another way that you can use free online courses to earn college credit is through challenge for credit. Most schools will allow you to challenge a course for credit without requiring that you take it. Just how they will do this depends on the school and the course, in most cases you will have to make arrangements with the professor to come up with a plan for demonstrating that you have mastered the course material. This may involve an exam or a project, or a combination of both.

While we have not yet reached the point of their being truly free online college courses the opportunity to learn for free is there. If you have an interest in a particular subject this can be a great way to learn. It is often possible to turn what you learn from these courses into credit but doing so will definitely not be free. 

Why Don't All Colleges Offer Online Degrees?

Currently there are a lot of colleges that offer online degrees so finding one should not be a problem. That being said you should not assume that all colleges will offer online programs. In fact it is generally the best known and most reputable schools that do not offer online degrees. There is of course a reason for this.

The reason that the well known, big name schools do not offer online degrees is that it would reduce the value of their regular degree programs. One of the reasons that people pay a hundred thousand dollars for a Harvard degree is that the number of people who have them is strictly limited. If they were to open the doors and start conferring thousands of online degrees every year the value would decline dramatically.

This recently became an issue when Berkeley attempted to start an online degree program, the students of the regular degree program protested against the move. So far Berkeley has introduced one online Master's degree program but it is unlikely that more are going to follow any time soon.

The schools that are much more likely to offer online degree programs are the ones whose job is to educate large numbers of people, like the state colleges. The job of the state colleges is to make educational opportunities available to as many people as they can so they have embraced online learning. They also don't have to worry nearly as much about too many graduates as adding a few more to the tens of thousands who get them every year is hardly going to devalue them.

The other colleges that are likely to offer online degrees are the ones that were set up specifically to do this. Because you can operate an online school with much less overhead than would be required for a regular college it has proven to be a good business for many companies.

While most big name schools have avoided offering online degrees some of them are starting to dip their toes in the water. As already mentioned Berkeley has started to offer one degree program. In addition Harvard has an online program that actually offers quite a few different degrees. They have decided that online learning is something they can't avoid. In order to get around the problem of devaluing their degrees they have decided to differentiate them. You can get a Harvard degree online but it is not the same degree that you would get if you attended class in person. This is probably the route that the other well known schools will follow.

Are Nationally Accredited Online Degrees Reputable?

If you are going to register for an online degree you have to make sure that you pay attention to the accreditation of the school offering the degree. The best by far is a school that is regionally accredited, this is the gold standard and any school that is regionally accredited can be considered a legitimate school. There are however quite a few schools that do not meet this requirement and that does not necessarily mean that they are bad, in fact many of them have national accreditation.

Nationally accredited online colleges are not as desirable as ones that are regionally accredited that is the simple reality. This does not however mean that NA schools are not legitimate. They do have to meet a certain standard and schools that meet this standard are generally considered to be legitimate, at least in the sense that they are not diploma mills.

There are however some downsides to attending a school that is nationally accredited rather than regionally accredited and you need to be aware of these. The biggest is that you will likely find that if you want to transfer to another school down the road that it will be very hard to transfer your credits. Schools that are regionally accredited rarely accept transfer credits from schools that are not. In addition you will also likely find it hard to get into a grad school that is RA if your undergraduate degree is from an NA school.

As a general rule even though nationally accredited schools are legitimate institutions they should be avoided. There are just too many negatives to attending one. Given that there are thousands of regionally accredited online colleges there is really no reason to attend one that is not.

When you are looking at any online school the first place that you should go in your research is to the accreditation, this should be listed on their website, if it is not easy to find it is probably best to just move onto your next option. Schools that have the proper accreditation will make this known.

So, are nationally accredited schools legitimate? The answer is that yes they are, however they are not really a good option for getting an online degree. There is nothing they can offer that a school that is RA can't offer without the disadvantages.

Are You Ready to Complete an Online Degree?

There has been a huge increase in the number of people registering for online degrees over the last few years. This is no huge surprise as online learning has made it possible for people who otherwise not be able to get a college education. The problem is that a large number of people are rushing out and starting online programs with thoughts about how they will benefit from completing their degree. Few put any real thought into the actual process of getting a degree and as a result a large number of people never finish.

One of the reasons for the very low online degree completion rate is that people underestimate how much work is involved. Combined with the fact that most people want to get it done as quickly as possible and it is fairly common to see students registering for too many courses at one time. It is called a full time course load for a reason, it requires a full time commitment. If you have a job and a family it is not particularly realistic to think that you are going to be able to carry a full course load. You are going to have to work at a slower pace which unfortunately means that it will take longer for you to get your degree done.

The other issue that a lot of people really struggle with when it comes to online degrees is motivating themselves to do the work. One of the great advantages of online learning is that it allows you to set your own schedule and study when you want to. While this sounds great the reality is that a lot of people need to have somebody to tell them when to get to work. If you can't get yourself to work you are going to really struggle with online learning.

The last thing that you want to do is spend thousands of dollars on tuition to get halfway through a degree and end up not finishing. To make sure that this doesn't happen you have to make sure that you are actually ready for online learning. This means that you have to have the necessary time available to do the work. If you only have a an hour a day to study you are going to have to limit yourself to one course at a time.

In a lot of ways online learning is self employment, you have to take responsibility for getting it done. The best way to do this is to schedule time for your studies and then stick to that schedule. Creating an office where you can be left alone to study is also helpful. Going in prepared will greatly increase your chances of completing your degree.

What is the Cheapest Regionally Accredited Online College?

The cheapest regionally accredited online college that I have managed to find is Louisiana State University. They offer their online and distance learning courses for just $119 per semester hour which compared to the cost of many other online colleges is very inexpensive. There are however a couple of caveats when it comes to taking online courses at LSU.

The first issue that you are going to encounter with LSU is that they offer only a very small number of online courses. That being said they do have a wide selection of the more traditional paper based distance learning courses. If you are willing to combine the two types of courses LSU is probably the least expensive way to get a distance learning degree.

The other big issue with LSU that may be a problem for some students is that LSU doesn't actually offer a distance learning degree. It may be possible to complete a degree entirely through distance learning however you will have to be admitted to one of the state university campuses and they will award the degree. The other option that you have is to take as many courses as you can through LSU and then transfer the credits to another school. If you are going to do this you will need to be careful to make sure that all of the courses that you take are transferable.

If you want to find an online degree program that can be completed entirely online the least expensive option that I have managed to find is Fort Hayes State University. They offer a reasonable number of programs that can be completed online, currently tuition is $182 per semester hour.

There are of course even less expensive ways to get a degree if money is really tight. The cheapest possible way to get a regionally accredited distance learning degree is to use the many examination programs that are available. Programs like CLEP and Dantes and several others will award university credit for about a hundred dollars a course, the price varies from program to program. If you take a 6 credit CLEP exam for example the cost is $80 which works out to about $13 per semester hour. You can transfer a limited number of exam credits to most online colleges, a few like Excelsior College or Thomas Edison State College will actually allow you to complete a whole degree using these exams. In theory this will allow you to complete a degree for less than $5000 including all of the fees charged by the colleges.

Can You Really get a Harvard Online Degree?

The answer to whether or not you can really get an online degree from Harvard is sort of. Harvard has a pretty extensive continuing education programs that does offer quite a few online courses and even a few online degrees. That being said there is a major caveat if you are going to go down this road.

The big thing that you have to keep in mind about Harvard online degrees is that they are not the same degree as the one that people attending regular classes get. The requirements are different and even the name of the degree is different. Admittedly a lot of people are not going to realize this and you can legitimately put a Harvard degree on your resume if you use their continuing education program. However anybody who has attended Harvard and most people in the world of academia will be well aware of the fact that it is not a “real” Harvard degree.

While the online degrees that are offered by Harvard may not be at the same standard as their other degrees this does not mean that they are not worth pursuing. Surprisingly in terms of cost a Harvard online degree is quite reasonably priced compared to those offered by a lot of other online schools. In addition the education that you get is very good even if it is not the same as the one offered to regular Harvard students, the classes are usually taught by the same instructors.

If you want to get a degree from Harvard it can only be done completely online at the masters degree level and even then they only offer a very small number of programs. There are also several graduate certificates that are on offer if you don't want to commit to a full time masters program, most of these can be laddered into a masters degree down the road if you wish to continue on.

At the undergraduate level the Harvard Extension school offers both Associate and Bachelor's degrees, and many of the courses are available online. There is however a requirement that you attend at least some of the courses in person. If you live in Boston this usually means attending night classes. For students who live further away they offer a summer school during which you can meet the requirement, in most cases however it will require at least two summers.

Choosing the Best Online Degree Program

Unfortunately when it comes to online degrees there is no one best program, you are going to have to choose the best degree program for your needs. This can be tricky because a lot of people really don't know what their needs are when it comes to online education. We will therefore take a look at some of the things that you should consider before you make your choice.

The first thing that you are going to want to think about when you are choosing an online degree program are why you need the degree. In most cases people say they are doing to improve their career prospects but this in itself does not answer the question. You have to think about things like whether you are going to need to continue on to graduate school, not all online degrees are particularly helpful when it comes to applying to a masters program. You also have to think about whether your desired career requires a specific degree or if any degree is acceptable. There are lots of careers where being able to check the box and say you have a degree is acceptable, in other careers it will matter what your degree is in and in some cases even where you got it.

Once you know what your reasons for getting a degree are the next step is to find an online school that offers a degree that meets all of your requirements. This may be very easy or very difficult depending on your situation. If you just need any degree to meet your career goals you will have lots of options, if you want to be an engineer on the other hand your options will be much more limited.

The next step is to take a look at the way that the schools you are considering teach their courses. Some will just give you a course syllabus and a list of textbooks and leave you on your own to work through the degree at your own pace. Others will require regular interaction through chat sessions and have pretty rigid schedules that you have to follow. While it may seem that a course that allows you to work on your own would be best because of the flexibility that it offers this is not always the case. A lot of people struggle when they don't have someone there to tell them when to do their work. You have to take a hard look at how you learn best and find an online schools that teaches in that way.

The last major consideration when you are looking for the best online degree is going to be cost. I am a big proponent of the idea that when it comes to online degrees you should take the cheapest option that meets all of your other needs. The reason for this is that when you choose a high priced school you are almost always paying for its reputation. The reality is that even the best online degree programs simply don't have a reputation to be worth paying extra for. In general if you can find an acceptable degree program that is offered online by your local state college that is usually the best option.

Are Fast Online Degrees Legitimate?

One of the things that a lot of people pursuing online degrees have in common is that they want to get their degree done as quickly as possible. Usually this is because they are working professionals who need the degree for a promotion or to move into a better job. Not surprisingly since there is a demand for fast online degrees there are now a lot of schools offering them. This does however beg the question of whether or not these degrees are legitimate.

Unfortunately in a lot of cases these fast degrees are not legitimate. This is particularly true of the ones that promise that they will award you a degree based on life experience, real colleges simply don't do this. In order to get a degree you are going to have to put in the work and that does take time. There are however a few options that can get you a degree fairly quickly, at least for some people.

The first thing that you have to make sure of if you want to get on a fast track degree program is to make sure that the school that is offering the degree is properlyaccredited. This means that they must have regional accreditation, any school that does not have this is crap and should be avoided.

1.    Accreditation is Critical: There is little value in going to the trouble and the expense of getting a degree if that degree is not useful. In the United States this means that you need to get your degree from a school that is regionally accredited. There are literally thousands of regionally accredited online colleges so there is really no reason to waste your time on a degree that isn’t.

2.     Consider Scheduling Issues: One of the great benefits of online schools is that they give you the freedom to take classes at times that are convenient for you. How much freedom you have in this regard however does vary from school to school. Some online colleges offer courses that allow you to set your own schedule entirely, there are no due dates for assignments for example. With these courses you generally get six months to work through them at your own pace and you will have little interaction with your teacher or other students.

 Other schools however actually have quite rigid schedules. Not only does this mean that you have to submit assignments at specific times but often you have to be online at certain times for chat sessions. If sticking to a schedule is a problem for you it may be a good idea to think hard before you enroll in a school with a rigid schedule.

3.   Think About the Costs: An online degree is one of those rare cases where you may not actually get what you pay for. There are lots of very expensive online schools, rarely however do they offer anything that you couldn’t get at much less expensive school. If you are getting a traditional degree it might well be worth the expense to go to Harvard because of its reputation, online schools however do not have the same reputation so there is no reason to pay a huge sum for your degree. The best option is usually your local state university, if not there are lots of other good quality schools that offer online degrees at reasonable prices.
